- U-DIR Directory Manager & File Browser gives users the ability to manage files
- and directories by means of a full screen ``point-and-shoot'' interface. File
- ownership, group access, and name can be changed by simply overtyping the
- relevant field on the display. Menu facilities give single-key control over the
- display, changing directory and tagging files for later deletion. U-DIR will
- not delete files without confirmation. An ``undelete'' function offers full
- control over the tagging. Users moving from DOS will find U-DIR familiar, while
- uncovering the full power of UNIX. U-DIR will relieve new users from having to
- remember the syntax of the basic commands. U-DIR is a boon to system
- administrators and infrequent users. Experienced users will find that U-DIR
- saves time by its per-user configuration file. This tells U-DIR how to
- ``execute'' data files by specifying what program is to be used. A shell escape
- facility with replay and command-line editing is available for more complex
- commands. U-DIR is small, under 40 KB, and fast. It is designed for minimum
- system load and to give the user a simple and easy interface. Unlike menu
- systems, U-DIR places the emphasis on the files. These hold your information
- and are valuable to you. U-DIR shows you the files and lets your operate on
- them simply, easily, and directly
-
- U-DIR/XE is a full-featured extension of the popular U-DIR interface. It
- duplicates all the functionality of U-DIR and adds such features as directory
- stack recall, command history, undo file changes, and file aggregate
- operations. The menu is fully configurable, and can be set to emulate LOTUS,
- WINDOWS, or MULTIMATE styles of operation. Speed-keys allow single-key
- operation of most menu functions. Other menu items give the user control over
- defaults, rescan, umask, and status. Files can be tagged by name, owner, or
- group. Tagged files can be temporarily hidden from view so the user can
- concentrate on specific files. The built-in command processor allows operations
- to be carried out on single files or groups of tagged files. Multiple display
- modes allow the user to choose how much detail about the file he wants to see.
- The configuration file for the extended edition allows the tools to be used to
- view, edit, and execute files to be specified in detail, as well as how they
- are to interact with U-DIR/XE. U-DIR/XE is targeted at the user who wants to
- get the most out of the UNIX system without having to worry about remembering
- command syntax or the tedium of typing the commands and parameter lists.
- U-DIR/XE is fast and powerful, but flexible and easily configured to meet
- specific user needs.
